Watertown Square Design & Engineering Services

City of WatertownWatertown, MA

Bowman has been selected by the City of Watertown to provide transportation engineering services for the detailed streetscape and roadway design of Watertown Square. Building on the “four corners” concept established through the Watertown Square Area Plan, Bowman will deliver a comprehensive, construction-ready design that translates the City’s vision into a detailed, buildable plan to support future construction.

The project focuses on improving safety, accessibility and mobility at one of the region’s key multimodal intersections, with Bowman’s design implementing the vision of reconfiguring the existing five-leg intersection into a simplified four-way layout to reduce conflict points and improve overall traffic flow for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and vehicles.

The design will include roadway reconstruction, wider sidewalks and shorter, safer crosswalks to enhance pedestrian comfort and visibility, while introducing additional curbside space to support parking and improve access to local businesses and amenities. It will further reduce excess roadway to reclaim about 3.4 acres of space, expanding the Charles River delta and increasing open space along the river.

Bowman’s scope of work includes the detailed design of roadways, sidewalks, crosswalks, bicycle and bus infrastructure, traffic systems, street lighting and underground utilities, while strengthening connections to the Watertown Community Path and supporting improvements identified by the City.

As part of a larger implementation strategy, the streetscape design is coordinated with zoning changes, redevelopment planning and future public-private partnership opportunities. Through this work, Bowman is helping deliver a more efficient, safer and better-connected transportation network that supports the long-term evolution of Watertown Square.
