Mile Long Bridge Project Receives ACEC State and National Honor Awards

February 29, 2024

The Illinois Tollway’s Mile Long Bridge project in Cook County, Illinois, has received multiple engineering awards, including an ACEC National Recognition Award, a 2024 ACEC Illinois Engineering Excellence Award and a 2024 ACEC Illinois Honor Award. Bowman provided construction engineering services for the project, which reconstructed a critical segment of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294).

The more than $185 million reconstruction replaced aging bridge structures originally built in 1958 and serves a corridor that carries more than 150,000 vehicles each day. The project included construction of two new bridges spanning rail lines, waterways and major freight facilities while maintaining traffic throughout construction.

Bowman led construction engineering efforts for the complex, multi-year project, coordinating with the Illinois Tollway, regulatory agencies, railroads, utilities, municipalities and private stakeholders. The team’s proactive approach helped support the successful delivery of one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects.

The project was delivered through a collaborative effort involving the Illinois Tollway, Bowman, H.W. Lochner, HDR and Quigg Engineering. The state and national recognition highlights the project’s engineering excellence, successful execution and long-term benefits for motorists and freight movement throughout the Chicago region.
