Bowman provided engineering design and landscape architecture services for Middlebury College’s redesign of the pedestrian entry at Johnson Hall. Originally constructed in a Brutalist architectural style, the building’s entrance did not meet ADA accessibility standards. Working collaboratively with the project architect, Bowman developed a new, fully accessible entry route that eliminates all stairs and creates an inclusive pathway for all users.
The redesigned approach integrates the new ADA-compliant route seamlessly with the existing site, directing pedestrian access to both the left and right sides of the building. The transition between the roadway sidewalk and the new pathways features a sculptural treatment using large concrete blocks, carefully designed to accommodate grade changes and enhance the visual character of the entry.
The project also introduced new gathering spaces through repurposed granite seating, enhanced landscaping and a vibrant sunflower planting area that softens the building’s concrete architecture and creates a more welcoming campus entrance. Together, these improvements enhance accessibility while establishing an attractive and functional arrival experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
