Chicago, IL

Bowman Consulting Group, Ltd. (Bowman) announced today it has been awarded a $48,000,000 contract by the Illinois Tollway Authority providing Construction Management services for the Tri‐State Tollway (I‐94/I‐294/I‐80) Mile Long Bridge project. The Tri-State Tollway, originally constructed in 1958, is the most important single link in the regional transportation network, connecting northern Illinois with neighboring states Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa, two major airports, numerous intermodal facilities, as well as thousands of businesses and hundreds of thousands of residents and patrons. The 22‐mile section of the Central Tri-State carries the heaviest volumes of passenger and freight traffic on the Tollway system. The Mile Long Bridge, located between 75th Street and LaGrange/Archer Roads is critical to the Central Tri‐State, because it carries patrons over three major waterways, two major railroads, several roadways and serves a major shipping distribution center for UPS and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

Since its original construction, the Mile-Long Bridge has undergone several expansions to its current configuration of four lanes in both directions. The reconstructed Mile Long Bridge will consist of two entirely new structures. The new structures will consist of 27 spans comprised of both continuous steel plate girders and PPC Bulb T-Beams. The centerline of the bridge will be moved to the east and will be constructed as two construction contracts. The first construction package will build the northbound structure and the second contract will demolish the existing north and southbound structures and construct the new southbound structure.

Bowman has a growing relationship with the Illinois Tollway and other long-term strategic relationships across the transportation sector. “We are very excited about this opportunity to showcase the talent and skillset our Bowman staff will offer to the Tollway,” said Jeff Druckman, Senior Vice President of Bowman’s Construction Engineering team. This project gives our team an opportunity to work on a legacy project.

The total construction budget for the project is estimated at $500,000,000 and will take place between two construction projects; one awarded in 2019 and another in 2021. The Bowman team, includes three mentor/protégé arrangements. These arrangements demonstrate Bowman’s commitment to assisting M/W/DBE firms in their growth and development. Construction is scheduled to begin in June of 2019 with completion by the end of 2024.
