
LEED v5 is one of the most significant updates to the U.S. Green Building Council’s framework in nearly a decade. Many prerequisites and credits have been introduced, reorganized, renamed, combined or relocated into other categories.
This post kicks off a series on the MEP-related changes in LEED v5, comparing each one against its LEED v4.1 predecessor. We’re starting with Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ), which saw some significant restructuring in the update: two credits collapsed into a single more targeted prerequisite, and the compliance approach shifted from a menu of optional strategies to a smaller set of measurable outcomes.

Minimum Indoor Air Quality Performance is Now Fundamental Air Quality
v4.1: The Minimum Indoor Air Quality Performance prerequisite established the minimum ventilation requirements every project had to satisfy before pursuing certification. The prerequisite relied primarily on ASHRAE 62.1-2010 and ensured that projects supplied adequate outdoor air to maintain acceptable indoor air quality for occupants.
v5: This no longer exists as an individual requirement. Instead, it’s now folded into a single prerequisite, Fundamental Air Quality, and updates ASHRAE 62.1-2022 compliance. Projects must investigate local outdoor air quality before determining ventilation strategy.
The revision also removes outdoor air intake flow alarms and their verification procedures and combines mechanically and naturally ventilated buildings into one unified approach. These revisions shift the focus from meeting minimum ventilation rates toward developing a more comprehensive indoor air quality strategy that considers both outdoor environmental conditions and occupant health.
Enhanced Indoor Air Quality Strategies is Now Enhanced Air Quality
v4.1: Enhanced Indoor Air Quality Strategies offered multiple optional paths for earning points, including enhanced filtration, operable windows, engineered natural ventilation, interior cross-contamination controls, source control strategies and CO2 monitoring.
v5: The credit has been renamed Enhanced Air Quality and substantially reorganized. Many of the strategies that were previously optional have now become mandatory through the Fundamental Air Quality prerequisite. The revised credit now rewards measurable improvements in ventilation rather than offering multiple independent compliance pathways.
Now, projects may earn one point by increasing outdoor air ventilation by 15 percent and two points by increasing ventilation by 30 percent. CO2 monitoring moved to a different credit (Air Quality Testing and Monitoring), and several compliance options have been removed, including engineered natural ventilation, enhanced filtration requirements, interior cross-contamination prevention, operable windows and several source control strategies. The remaining credit focuses primarily on increasing outdoor air ventilation above minimum code requirements.
