The Kinsley Avenue and Promenade Street Greenway project, the newest one-mile section of Providence’s Woonasquatucket River Greenway, has earned three Rhode Island industry awards recognizing its impact on mobility, public space and environmental resilience.
The project received the Excellence in Plan Implementation Award from the American Planning Association Rhode Island Chapter, the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award from WTS Rhode Island and a third-place Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Rhode Island.
Located just west of downtown Providence along Kinsley Avenue and Promenade Street, the project transformed a constrained industrial corridor into a safer, more accessible riverfront connection for pedestrians, cyclists, paddlers and nearby businesses. The improvements close a key gap in the seven-mile Woonasquatucket River Greenway, creating a continuous, car-free connection between Eagle Square and downtown Providence.
Bowman provided engineering, transportation and construction services for the project, which was completed in partnership with the City of Providence and the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council. The project features a separated multi-use trail, pocket parks, kayak launches at Eagle Street and Leland Street, native landscaping, wayfinding signage and green stormwater infrastructure designed to capture and treat runoff before it reaches the river.
The design balances transportation, recreation and environmental goals within a complex urban corridor, improving access to the Woonasquatucket River while preserving freight movement and business access along the route.
Bowman team members recently joined state and local officials, project partners and community members at a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the newest section of the greenway.
