7 Seawall Road Shoreline Protection & Slope Stabilization

Southwest Harbor, ME

Bowman provided civil engineering and design-build coordination services to address severe shoreline erosion threatening a single-family residence. Storms in early 2024 caused significant shoreline degradation, leaving just nine feet between the home and the edge of a steep, 30-foot slope leading to the beach. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection classified the property as being in peril, requiring urgent stabilization measures.

Bowman assembled a design-build team of geotechnical engineers and marine construction specialists to develop a shoreline restoration solution on an accelerated schedule. The team advanced the project from conceptual design through final design, incorporating an armored slope reinforced with toe armor stones weighing 2 to 5 tons to protect against further erosion.

Construction required specialized marine access, with all equipment and materials transported to the site by barge. Additional improvements included grading, shoreline protection measures and modifications to existing waterfront structures.

Completed in October 2024, ahead of schedule and under budget, the project stabilized the shoreline and helped protect the residence from continued erosion.
