Bowman staff has provided design engineering services for more than 200 sewer improvements on a task order basis throughout the City of Chicago. Sewer sizes vary from small diameter to 15-ft by 12-ft monolithic concrete sewers. Sewer construction has been open cut using trench shields or steel and wood sheeted earth retention systems, or in tunnel by pipe jacking or other trenchless technology. Work is performed by private contract and city crews. Sewer materials include cast in place concrete, precast reinforced concrete pipe, ductile iron pipe and vitrified clay pipe.
Bowman prepares final contract plans, specifications and estimates for sewer improvements including lead service line replacement and water main relocations. Work includes data collection and initial assessments, coordination of survey and geotechnical / environmental engineering, utility coordination, sewer alignments and profiles, structural design, compliance with IEPA water sewer separation requirements, cross sections/typical sections, ADA design, traffic control and detours, surface drainage design, permitting, constructability reviews, specifications and cost estimating, bid packaging for various funding sources and QA/QC.
Work on all projects that were not constructed prior to 2023 has been performed in compliance with the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act. Bowman reviews available records to create Water Service Line Inventories for each project, which serve as the basis for creating Water Service Line Replacement Plan sheets. Bowman worked closely with CDWM Sewer Section staff to develop the CAD standard for these sheets, the subsequent CAD standard updates required for Restoration Plans and the specifications and pay items for the work.
