Gwinnett County Community Park’s master plan program includes a multi-use field complex, playground/splashpad complex, a play courts area with three-on-three soccer/basketball/volleyball, a four-square setup and outdoor ping pong. A 1.5-mile perimeter multi-use trail (for walking and bicycling) encompasses the park and connects all use areas.
In 2018, our team provided master planning, construction documentation and construction administration for the park. The client sought a “hybrid” approach to the services, including an abbreviated master planning phase that would substitute for the customary preliminary design phase typically included in park CDs. After preparing a final master plan, our team coordinated public involvement efforts, including a well-attended public input meeting in January 2019.
From there, the team segued immediately into the design development phase, advancing construction documents into permitting, bidding and construction administration. Per the county’s request, the project was expedited to start construction in the fourth quarter. Existing site conditions include a 100-ft wide multiple utility easement, a 15-in Gwinnett County gravity sanitary sewer, wetlands, creeks and substantial topographic relief. Geotechnical testing indicates a great deal of artificial earth fill material, high water table and rock requiring careful design engineering to minimize site development cost.
The project is currently in the construction documentation phase.
