The transformation of the historic Mission Road Power Plant in San Antonio marks a shift from a century-old industrial site into a cutting-edge energy hub. Constructed in 1909 by CPS Energy, this steel-framed brick powerhouse once harnessed steam turbo generators cooled by the nearby San Antonio River. Though it ceased operations in 2003, the structure remains ready for a new chapter as the home of EPIcenter.
EPIcenter is an initiative set to reshape the future of energy, offering a space that includes a think tank, startup incubator, fabrication lab, exhibit hall, and conference center. Repurposing the decommissioned plant posed challenges, especially without original architectural plans.
Our team used laser scanning and drone technology to capture over 1,000 precise scans and aerial data in just six days. This documentation enabled the creation of a highly accurate Revit model, the cornerstone of the project’s planning process. Integrated into a virtual reality engine, the Revit model allowed the client and consultants to digitally explore the site and identify details that might have been missed in person.
The collected data not only facilitated the design but played a key role in the client’s marketing, showcasing the project’s potential to investors. This project exemplifies the powerful blend of historic preservation and technological innovation, breathing new life into a former industrial landmark while paving the way for energy advancements in San Antonio.
