Ken Lawrence Park: Athletic Fields & Stream Valley Trail

Tysons, VA

As part of the 2.5 million sq. ft. redevelopment project known as Arbor Row, located within the heart of the new Tyson Urban Center, Bowman provided full service engineering, environmental, surveying and construction administration services for the first two synthetic turf fields in Tysons, VA. Bowman’s services included development of zoning entitlement plans, schematic through construction plan design, bid assistance, and construction administration support. Specifically, our services included field layout and site design and design of two rectangular fields (soccer), stormwater management design, parking lot, streetscape, utility design, stream valley trail connectivity and pathway design, supervision of sports field lighting design, full topographic and construction stake-out survey, easement plat preparation, and construction oversight. The project had significant topographic challenges as there was a grade change of approximately forty feet in elevation from one side to another. Also associated with the fields development was the restoration of 800 LF of degraded stream valley, installation of 1,000 LF of new trails, and a 30-ft long pedestrian bridge crossing.

This project was fast tracked for implementation by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) due to the immense demand for youth soccer paying facilities within the Tysons and McLean area. As such, the entire project was designed, permitted and constructed within 21 months, and was delivered to the FCPA two months ahead of schedule.
