Our team delivered structural engineering services for the bridge deck replacement and the installation of new expansion joints on this historic bridge, which serves as the primary connection between Dallesport, Washington, and The Dalles, Oregon. The bridge spans the BNSF railroad and The Dalles Locks. This project involved replacing the concrete bridge deck, rails, navigation and aviation lights, and illumination, all while preserving pedestrian access. The bridge features a 24-foot roadway (two 12-foot lanes without shoulder or shy distance) and a concrete sidewalk on the northbound side. With multiple utilities attached to the bridge, extensive utility coordination was essential. To expedite the timeline, reduce utility and traffic disruptions, and minimize roadway closures, we implemented Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques.
