Calino Avenue Sewer and Storm Drain Improvements Project Receives APWA Project of the Year Award

December 11, 2024

Bowman and the City of Baldwin Park were recognized with the 2024 APWA Southern California Chapter BEST Project of the Year Award in the Drainage, Water and Wastewater category for the Calino Avenue Sewer and Storm Drain Improvements project. The award recognizes the project team’s efforts to address longstanding infrastructure challenges affecting residents while improving safety, accessibility and stormwater management.

The project addressed decades of flooding concerns and sanitary health risks in the neighborhood through the construction of a new underground storm drainage trench and an extension of the sanitary sewer main. The improvements connected homes previously served by aging septic systems to the municipal sewer system and enhanced the area’s overall drainage performance.

Bowman worked with the City of Baldwin Park to deliver a solution that required extensive coordination with local and state utility agencies. The project included new sanitary sewer laterals, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street resurfacing, as well as protective measures to safely accommodate utility crossings and meet public health requirements.

By resolving persistent flooding issues and modernizing critical infrastructure, the project improved neighborhood safety, accessibility and quality of life while providing a long-term solution to longstanding community needs.
