Sub-Bottom Profiling of Olcott Harbor

Olcott, NY

Bowman performed sub-bottom profiling at Olcott Harbor in Lake Ontario. We ran approximately 48,000 transects of varying lengths using a full-spectrum sub-bottom profiler, towing an EdgeTech sub-bottom profiler alongside Bowman’s survey vessel. This process produces a 2-dimenisional stratigraphic cross section by using acoustic energy to image sub-surface features in an aquatic environment.

The survey identified layers of rock on the Olcott Harbor seafloor, information that enabled the client to expand its existing breakwater piers. Because high-accuracy real-time kinematic data was synced with the geophysical data, interpretations were readily overlaid onto the client’s design drawings and boring-location plans.

Other GIS data, such as structural geologic features, were integrated to optimize the existing conceptual site model to help target boring locations for additional geotechnical investigation.
